The Battle of Zenta on 11 September 1697, south of the town in Hungary on the eastern bank of the Tisza, was a decisive battle of the Fifth Austro-Turkish War and one of the worst defeats ever inflicted on the Ottoman Empire. This Habsburg victory was the final step that forced the Ottoman Empire to sign the Treaty of Karlowitz in 1699, which brought an end to Turkish rule over Hungary. This battle also marked Prince Eugene of Savoy-Carignan’s first independent command, preceding a long series of victories
