After the Battle of Oudenaarde, Lille was at the mercy of the Imperial forces sent by Emperor Joseph I. Boufflers arrived just in time to defend the city with 15,000 men. The battle took place on the plain of Wattignies, and the French were routed on 22 October 1708. Boufflers and 8,000 survivors surrendered on 28 October
