Rev. ·:· INDVSTRIA ·:· ET ·:· LABORE ·:· / CIC IC CII. A spade in the centre of the field, adorned with a crown, with the town in the background surmounted by its name: GRAEF. Van Loon I, 567; Silver – 49 mm – 12 h Top Pop: this is the only graded specimen! PCGS AU55 (51871122). Only slight circulation wear. Attractive grey patina. Superb. Grave (Graaf or Graef) in North Brabant, an important town on the Meuse, fell into the hands of the Catholic Spaniards after the siege of 1586 and was then recaptured by the Protestant House of Orange in 1602. The town fell to the French in 1672 before being recaptured in 1674. In 1602, the siege lasted from 18 July to 20 September (Eighty Years’ War) and was led by the Dutch forces of Maurice of Orange and the English forces of Francis Vere.
