RUSSIA Nicholas I (1825–1855). Rouble, inauguration of the column of Alexander I, by H. Gube, burnished blank (PROOF) 1834, Saint Petersburg. Obverse: АЛЕКСАНДРЪ ПЕРВЫЙ Б.М. ИМПЕРАТОРЪ ВСЕРОС. Bareheaded head facing right, with the signature GUBE F. below. Reverse: АЛЕКСАНДРУ / ПЕРВОМУ - GRATEFUL / RUSSIA with (date). The Column of Alexander I in Saint Petersburg; in the exergue: 1. РУБЛЬ. Bitkin 894 - KM.C69 - Dav.285; Silver – 36 mm – 12 h NGC PF 61 (2935045-012). Burnished proof finish with mirror-like fields and satin-finished reliefs, on a carefully struck blank. Only minor handling marks on the fields. Superb in Proof condition. Alexander’s Column, on Palace Square in Saint Petersburg, was completed in 1834. Based on a design by the French architect Auguste de Montferrand, it consists of a 25-metre-high red granite shaft, sourced from Finland, weighing 660 tonnes. It took three thousand men to erect it. At the top, the angel holding a cross bears the likeness of Alexander I.
