VIETNAM Annam, Tu Duc (1848–1883). 5 tiên ND (1848–1883). Obverse: Tu Duc thông bao ‘Tu Duc’s legal tender’ in four Chinese characters surrounding the central perforation. Reverse: Ngu Phuc inscriptions ‘The Five Blessings’ in two characters around the central perforated square. Above, in the sky, five bats are flying, arranged in groups of two and three. Schr.359-360 v. – KM.457.1 – Fr.48; Silver – 43 mm – 12 h NGC AU DETAILS ENVIRONMENTAL DAMAGE (8769670-008). A very slight punch mark on the reverse. With a varied patina displaying black and golden highlights. Almost Superb. In Chinese or Annamite, the words for ‘happiness’ and ‘bat’ are both pronounced ‘fook’. In Chinese tradition, the five blessings are health, wealth, longevity, the love of virtue and a painless death. The bat is thus found as an attribute of emperors or on amulets.
