Slightly domed, with a faint strike on the right: unfinished planchet. In its original condition, with its original lustre and strike colour. Proof.
Minted by Poinsart and Veyret in Hai Phong from an engraving by René Mercier. René Mercier (1886–1974) was an engraver and medallist, a pupil at the École Boulle and later at the École des Arts et Métiers. In 1927, he became a lecturer at the Hanoi School of Applied Arts and subsequently joined the Hanoi School of Fine Arts, where he taught until 1946. As a medallist, he was commissioned to design the Bao Dai sapèque in 1933. In 1940, he engraved the 1-cent coins, designed by Barrière, modelled on those by Lindauer in Paris, with the difference being a lotus flower instead of the tricolour cockade. In 1943, he became the designer and engraver of the ‘fu’ coins for the Customs and Revenue Service, minted at the new workshop in Hanoi [F. Joyaux, BSFN, 2010]
