Description
JUSTIN I and JUSTINIAN I 4 April - 1 August 527 D N IVSTIN AND IVSTINIAN P P AVG. Justin and Justinian seated frontally on a throne. Between their heads, a small cross. In the exergue, CONOB. R/. VICTORIA AVCCCI. Angel standing, holding a long cross and a cruciform globe. In field, star and in exergue, CONOB. ♦ Sear 122 Solidus (gold penny) struck in Constantinople (4.51 g). Very rare. Very beautiful. Of modest origin and with little education, Justin I relied on his nephew Justinian throughout his reign to direct the administration of the empire. When his health declined, he associated Justinian with the throne in order to ensure his succession. The transition of imperial power is well illustrated by the joint coinage of the two emperors. Although minted over just four months, from 4 April to 1 August 527, the solidi of the joint reign show 10 variants produced by 10 mints.
