Description
COMMISSIONED CHINA, Qianlong period (1735–1795). Porcelain PLATE with a curved rim bearing the coat of arms of the Marquis of Rubi (1725–1795), featuring the marquis’s crown; the rim is adorned with a gilded frieze of wolf’s teeth, and the wing is decorated with a vine motif. Diameter: 38 cm. Biography: Cayetano Maria Pignatelli Rubí Corbera y San Climent (c. 1725–1795) was a Spanish aristocrat who was commissioned by King Charles III of Spain to inspect the fortresses (presidios) on the northern border of New Spain (present-day Mexico, New Mexico and Texas) and to make recommendations for improving defences against raids by Native American tribes, notably the Apaches. The Treaty of Fontainebleau (1762) brought an end to the French presence in the Americas by ceding to Spain the lands west of the Mississippi and to Great Britain those west of the river. Owing to the advance of British settlers into Spanish territories, King Charles III of Spain began to focus on the struggle against Great Britain and on reforming and strengthening his control over his American colonies, which he had neglected during the Seven Years’ War. To this end, he appointed José de Gálvez to reorganise the administration and finances of New Spain, whilst the Marquis of Rubí was tasked with inspecting the northern frontier defences of New Spain, comprising 24 presidios scattered from the Gulf of California to present-day Louisiana, stretching over nearly 1,600 km. He visited 23 of the 24 presidios, travelling approximately 12,200 km (7,600 miles) in 23 months between 1766 and 1768. His travel report is a valuable source of information on living conditions on the northern frontier of New Spain. His recommendations, which were subsequently implemented, called for Spain to withdraw from certain presidios located in the far north of its territory, particularly in Louisiana and eastern Texas, and to reinforce those that were in poor condition. He also recommended that San Antonio should replace Los Adaes as the capital of Spanish Texas. To counter the Indian threat, he advocated an offensive war against the Apaches and an alliance with the Comanches in order to subdue them.
