Description
18th century french school. "The game of the hot hand". Oil on canvas without frame. (Restorations). H.104 L.122. "The game of the hot hand" was a traditional game popular in 18th century gallantry, in which a blindfolded character had to recognise the person touching his hand, especially among children and young people, and had been played for several centuries in France and other European countries. It was generally played in groups, without any equipment, which explains its success in schools, playgrounds and at parties. The principle was based on a slap on the wrist, surprise and, above all, the ability to guess who had done the slapping. Descriptions of the game date back to the Middle Ages, and can be found in literature and old paintings.
