VIRGIN in majesty in beautifully carved polychrome wood. Base decorated with a heart. Bohemian school, Prague 18th-19th century. H.76 Diam.31. This type of statue, the earliest of which dates from 1345/1350 and is kept in the Cloisters in New York, was frequently revived by Bohemian sculptors over the following centuries until the 19th century, due to its popularity as a means of protecting women and children. Their workmanship varied greatly, ranging from endearing folk art to highly classical compositions.
