Description
POPULAR REPRESENTATION of Saint Apolline in oak. Northern France 19th century. H.30 L.18. A fine curiosity representing the martyrdom of the saint whose executioners pull out her teeth. Originally, she was to be transported in their carts to serve as a religious guarantor for the "tooth pullers" who criss-crossed towns and villages until the early 20th century. Saint Apolline was their patron saint, just as she is today's patron saint of dentists.
