Description
A RARE SCULPTURE in the round, carved from polychrome lime wood, depicting Saint Verny, patron saint of winegrowers. The saint is depicted wearing his traditional hat, with his faithful dog at his feet; a wineskin and a bousset (or small barrel) rest on a terrace of vegetation, whilst his right hand holds a wine-grower’s pruning knife (with a wooden handle and a wrought-iron blade), whilst his left hand grasps a vine shoot. (Statue group with fine remnants of polychromy, ‘in its natural state’, unrestored, with signs of wear, damage, losses and traces of woodworm). 17th-century Auvergne. H.58. Base 39x14.
