MONTES D. ‘Allegory of Pleasure and Virtue’. Oil on panel. H.30 L.39. The work depicts the famous dilemma of Hercules, torn between the two paths that lie before him: on the one hand, pleasure and sensual delight in the form of a beautiful young woman who tempts him by offering him a rose, a symbol of earthly and fleeting pleasures; and on the other, Virtue, here personified by the armed goddess Minerva, who points him towards the temple of Glory perched in the distance on the hill.
