IRAN – Medal of the Imperial Order of the Lion and the Sun (later known as the Order of Homayoun). Knight’s Star (Class V), Civil Division, in silver. A rare version of the Knight’s Star, in silver with openwork rays, issued in the late 19th century. Long awarded to foreigners (later extended to Persians) who had rendered significant services to Persia. A silver star with multiple rays, the enamelled centre depicting a reclining lion with the rising sun. The Lion and the Sun (Shir o Khorshid) is the imperial emblem of Persia, a symbol of sovereignty, justice and light. The ribbon is frayed.
