Description
CAUSARD, Watchmaker to the King – (c. 1720 – 1780) An impressive table-top clock with its wooden veneer base, richly decorated with chiselled and gilded bronze in the Rocaille style, featuring scrolls, foliage and dynamic motifs. The dial, featuring thirteen enamelled cartouches, displays the hours in Roman numerals and the minutes in Arabic numerals. The central cartouche bears the inscription: ‘CAUSARD Horloger du Roy suivant la Cour’. The case is stamped with the mark of Nicolas-Jean MARCHAND, a cabinetmaker who was granted master status around 1735. The clock is in working order, complete with key and pendulum. Dimensions: 105 cm for the case and 44 cm for the base. Louis XV period, 18th century. Shows normal signs of wear and has undergone some restoration.
