Description
Dutch school, second half of the 19th century. In the style of Johan Barthold Jongkind (1819–1891). Dutch canal at sunset. Oil on panel depicting a bustling canal. The composition is characterised by a subtle exploration of light effects, with the setting sun reflected in the calm waters of the canal, in a style directly inspired by the Dutch landscapes of Johan Barthold Jongkind. Signed ‘Jongkind’ and dated 1876 in the lower right-hand corner. Antique panel set in a late 19th-century wooden and gilded stucco frame. Dimensions (excluding frame): 21.7 cm x 31.7 cm. A request for authentication is currently pending with the Jongkind Committee in Paris and The Hague.
