A patinated and gilded bronze CLOCK representing Paul and Virginie with young Mauritian porters, the base decorated with a frieze depicting the shipwreck of Saint Géran, an episode from the novel by Bernardin de Saint Pierre. The two young black bearers in loincloths frame the enamelled dial signed "Varcollier à Marseille" and support a palanquin with pampers, on which are Paul and Virginie accompanied by the slave Domingue's dog Fidèle.
