Description
Santos Hernández (Madrid, 1874 - 1943) Spanish guitar made of cypress wood. Dated 1929. It still has the original label inside that reads “Santos Hernández Luthier. Madrid. 1929.” Cedar neck, ebony fingerboard, spruce top, cypress sides and back, Rio rosewood headplate and bridge. Attached is a report by the luthier Tomoyuki Furuta assessing the condition of the guitar, dated 12 September 2026. As stated by the Casa Sors Guitars museum, “Santos Hernández is one of the finest guitar makers in history; throughout the years, his guitars have been played by the greatest guitarists in the world.” Below is an excerpt from Domingo Prat’s description in his 1934 Diccionario de guitarristas: “As a guitar maker, he is considered the sole and undisputed ‘ace’ in instruments for the Andalusian style; and as a maker of concert instruments, he is undoubtedly among the few truly outstanding craftsmen deserving the additional title of ‘great master’. His ‘fine’ guitars are elegant, solid in their most sensitive part, the soundboard; their purfling and mosaics are of impeccable refinement.” Reference bibliography: - Casa Sors Guitars. (n.d.).
