Description
Plan of the Hermit’s House in El Capricho Park, Alameda de Osuna. Madrid. 1795. 30,7 x 45,7 cm. Plan executed in gouache and ink on laid paper. Design created between 1795 and 1796 by Ángel María Tadey, a renowned Italian decorator and stage designer. The structure depicted is the Hermit’s House (or La Ermita), one of the garden’s most emblematic architectural follies. It was built between 1787 and 1839. Both the design and the architecture were commissioned by María Josefa Pimentel y Téllez-Girón, Duchess of Osuna. In addition to a legend detailing the spatial information depicted in the sketch, the following handwritten inscription appears on the plan: 'Casa del Hermitaño imbentada y dirijida p. Angel Maria Fadey, por disposición de la Exma. Sra. Duquesa de Osuna mi Sra. en posesión de la Alameda el año de 1795.'
