Description
REICHE Jean-André (1752-1817), after : The reader. Chased bronze clock with a gilded and black patina decorated with a young woman dressed in antique style sitting on a gondola armchair with a black patina decorated with palmettes and acanthus leaves. She is leaning against a draped table on which the movement is inscribed and is absorbed in reading a book by the light of an oil lamp. White enamelled dial with black Roman numerals showing the hours on a white background. Signed "Blanc fils - Palais Royal". Base decorated with a frieze of palmettes, scrolls and acanthus leaves. Early 19th century. Base in sea-green marble slabs resting on four toupie feet. Size: H.34 - W.29 - D.14 cm (partially redecorated, one foot to be refixed, restorations to the movement, later marble slab base)
Jean-André Reiche (1752-1817) designed this model, which he registered with the Bibliothèque Impériale on 19 February 1805 and published in a bronzier's sales catalogue in 1806. An identical clock signed by Bailly was delivered in 1806 for the Secretary of State of the Kingdom of Italy in Fontainebleau, in the bedroom of Monsieur Aldini. Following the success of this model, variations were made in the arrangement of objects and furniture, while respecting the setting and iconography.
