Description
Set of 5 round tortoiseshell boxes with gold mountings, late 18th – early 19th century, each featuring a miniature portrait on ivory in the centre; one depicts a woman and is signed ‘Bornet’, attributed to Claude Bornet (1733–1804), one thought to be of Sir Samuel Bentham, naval architect to Prince Potemkin in Russia, and two gentlemen, gold mounts, diameter 6 to 8 cm

-Samuel Bentham: illegible signature. Presumed to be Bentham in his Russian uniform. Gold frame. Crack in the tortoiseshell on the side of the lid;
dark tortoiseshell.
-Woman: signed Bornet. Miniature mounted on this light-coloured tortoiseshell box – in good condition
-Portrait of a man: in the style of a French revolutionary; an object has become lodged in the frame, so the paint layer is damaged. Light-coloured tortoiseshell box in good condition
-Portrait of a man wearing a wig – tortoiseshell box in good condition. Gold mountings have come loose, with no screws, and the upper gold border is missing.
