Set of three ‘Souvenir’ dance card cases, late 18th–early 19th century, – a brown tortoiseshell case inlaid with gold and metal, decorated with small flowers, stars and a scattered pattern of dots, adorned with an oval miniature depicting a young woman in bust form; the gilded metal mount is chiselled with foliage friezes, and the lid bears the inscription ‘SOUVENIR’. With its ivory inserts, – a green lacquer case with a chiselled gilded metal mount, adorned on each side with an oval grisaille miniature depicting cherubs in allegorical compositions, within openwork frames of knotted ribbons and laurel branches, bearing the inscriptions ‘SOUVENIR’ ’ and ‘D’AMITIÉ’. With its ivory inserts, – a black lacquer case, with a two-tone gold mount, chased and engraved with a design of ribbons, garlands and foliage, adorned with oval medallions decorated in gold lacquer with a Japanese-style landscape, bearing the inscription ‘SOUVENIR’.
