Description
Life-size Virgin and Child in carved, polychrome and gilded lime wood, Franconia or Nuremberg, c. 1490–1520, by a member of the circle or a follower of Veit Stoss (c. 1447–1533).
The crowned Virgin, standing, holds the naked Infant Jesus. The elongated face with downcast eyelids, the Child’s spiralling curls and the loose, angular rendering of the drapery place the work within the tradition of Franconian and Nuremberg sculpture around 1500, in the circle of Veit Stoss; height 167 cm excluding the plinth
Provenance: Schlote family, Göttingen, Lower Saxony; the collection of Dr Karl Schlote, Eschwege, North Hesse, assembled mainly between 1950 and 1990, then passed down through the family
Similar example: Pl 0107, Madonna House from the artist’s residence, on permanent loan to the Germanisches Nationalmuseum in Nuremberg
Reverse side deeply hollowed out, with traces of old tools. Original polychromy and gilding, showing wear, losses, cracks, restorations and traces of woodworm damage; height 167 cm (excluding plinth).
