Description
Palace tile in a medallion
Qajar Iran, 19th century
Silica ceramic wall tile with polychrome painted decoration, featuring a Qajar monument within a medallion edged with black leaves, on a yellow background.
An old label on the reverse reads ‘Tile from Sharz ….. near Teheran Persia’.
(Condition: chips to the edges).
Dimensions: 20 x 21 cm
Provenance: private collection since the early 20th century, descended from the Copland Griffiths family.
This tile was certainly manufactured in Shiraz for a Qajar palace in Tehran, and this is probably what the label on the reverse indicates.
