Daniel Ridgway Knight was an American artist from Philadelphia. He studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, where he associated with the Impressionists. He devoted himself to depicting French peasant life; his glass-roofed studio enabled him to work throughout the seasons and to study the different phases of the day and their impact on the environment. Inspired by the fields, nature and the work of peasant women, his works pay particular attention to the realistic depiction of the landscape. He was awarded the silver medal and the Cross of the Legion of Honour at the 1889 Paris World’s Fair.
