LOUIS-GABRIEL MOREAU, KNOWN AS MOREAU THE ELDER (1740–1806). Landscape of Île-de-France Oak panel, single plank, unparqueted Annotated on the reverse of the panel Minor losses Height 13.5 cm – Width 16.5 cm A landscape painter operating on the fringes of the Academy and official circles, Louis-Gabriel Moreau drew on the landscape tradition of the Dutch Golden Age whilst adapting it to the new sensibility emerging in the 18th century, combining views of ruins with atmospheric effects. He thus formed part of the pre-Romantic movement developed by late 18th-century landscape painters such as Hubert Robert and Pierre-Jacques Volaire.
