Born in Reims in 1852, he spent a brief period at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris and in Gérôme’s studio, and studied under André Gill and Jean-Baptiste Carpeaux. He became friends with Paul Verlaine and Arthur Rimbaud, frequented Parisian artistic and literary circles, and took part in the Impressionist exhibitions of 1879, 1880, 1881 and 1886. As an illustrator for numerous satirical and illustrated newspapers, he made a name for himself with his scenes of modern life, the legal world, café-concerts and behind the scenes at the Opera. His work reflects a critical view of Belle Époque society. He died in Paris in 1931.
