Ambroise Vollard, a leading art dealer and publisher, commissioned Georges Rouault – whom he had been representing since 1910 – to produce a series of etchings inspired by the grotesque character of Ubu, created by Alfred Jarry. However, the project was delayed, as Rouault constantly reworked his plates and Vollard demanded images that conformed to his vision. The engravings were not published until after Vollard’s death in 1948. In these prints, Rouault reinterprets Jarry’s character using thick lines, dramatic modelling and strong contrasts.
