Description
[DUHAMEL du MONCEAU]
Descriptions des Arts et Métiers, faites ou approuvées par Messieurs de l'Académie Royale des Sciences.
A Paris, chez Moutard, 1762-1788, 24 volumes in-folio (tomés I à XXV, sans le II) bound in full contemporary shagreened basane, spine ribbed and decorated, title and appendix, some headbands faded and spines cracked.
First (and sometimes second) edition of the first encyclopaedic description of arts and crafts in France. It preceded and foreshadowed Diderot's Encyclopédie.
The Description des Arts et Métiers comprises 80 titles in all, 18 of which are signed by Duhamel du Monceau, the others by Réaumur, de La Lande, Roubo, Garsault, Courtivon, Malouin, Bedos de Celles, etc. These volumes, published under the title Art d'un métier spécifique (art du tonnelier, du facteur d'orgues ou du tanneur, etc.), were sold separately, making it virtually impossible to find a complete collection of all the titles.
It comprises 68 parts in 24 volumes, and is illustrated with 1,498 copper-engraved plates, some of which are double plates or fold-outs.
Detailed description on request.
Provenance: Collection Familiale des la Tour d'Auvergne.
