Description
LAUDIN Jean (1616-1688) Rare pair of enamel cups painted in grisaille with gold highlights from the same series depicting the Abduction of Dejanira and Hercules fighting Cerberus after engravings by Antonio Tempesta published in 1606 (fig.a and b). The one of Déjanire is monogrammed .I.L. Limoges, Jacques I Laudin (Limoges, 1627-1695), second half of the 17th century, circa 1660/70 D. 21.5 cm Labels and extracts from the sales catalogue on the back (some restorations and accidents around the edges) Provenance : Former Louis Visconti collection (1791-1853). Sale Paris, Hôtel Drouot, Me Bonnefons de Lavialle, Catalogue du Cabinet de Feu M. Visconti Architecte de S. M. L'Empereur ..., 13 March 1854, lot 69. The workmanship of these bowls is similar to that of a set of enamelled plaques made in 1663 by Jacques I Laudin to be mounted on several reliquary shrine cases. Relating episodes from the life of Saint Timothy, they were intended for the church of the same name, located to the south of the Abbey of Saint-Remi in Reims, and are now kept in the city's museum (inv. D.978.D.24 to D.978.D.37, fig.c). No other bowl in this series of heroes of Antiquity inspired by Tempesta's engravings has been linked to these from the former Louis Visconti collection. This renowned architect and decorator, who was born in Rome in 1791 and died in Paris in 1853, is best known for having designed Napoleon I's tomb at Les Invalides and participated in the refurbishment of the Louvre under Napoleon III. An important figure in 19th-century Paris, he also designed several monumental fountains and squares, including the Saint-Sulpice fountain. He was also a curator at the Vatican Museum and the Louvre. 4 000 / 6 000 Appraiser: Laurence Fligny Laurence Fligny MEDIUM AGE - RENAISSANCE - XVIIth CENTURY 01.45.48.53.65 / 06.78.48.44.53 www.fligny-haute-epoque.com
