Description
JAPAN - MEIJI period (1868 - 1912)
Large carved ivory okimono (Elephantidae SPP), peasant holding a rooster, at his feet rooster, hen and chick. Signed Seiko.
H. 29 cm
This important ivory okimono, depicting a peasant holding a cockerel while another cockerel, a hen and a chick come to life at his feet, is fully in keeping with the refined production of the Meiji era (1868-1912). Large-scale pieces like this one were often made for wealthy European customers, who were keen to acquire spectacular works illustrating Japanese craftsmanship.
The scene depicted is typical of the themes popular at the end of the XIXᵉ century: rural life, treated with a naturalism and sensitivity characteristic of the Meiji workshops. The attention paid to the attitudes of the peasant, the plumage of the birds and the details of the clothing reveals the fine, precise chasing characteristic of the Meiji era.
The Seikô signature reinforces the attribution to a renowned workshop of the period, known for the quality of its carved ivory and the precision of its figurative work.
