Description
CANADA - QUEBEC - "View of the Episcopal Palace and its ruins, as they appear when descending to the lower town". 1761. Etching and burin by Ignace FOUGERON (active from 1750 to 1782), after Richard SHORT. Proof on laid paper. Fine copper margins. View of the bishop's palace in Quebec in 1759 by Richard Short following the siege of the city by the British army. While the proportions and details of the building are fairly accurate, the layout and location of the Côte de la Montagne are incorrect. This is probably due to the London engraver who published Short's drawing in 1761. 32 x 51.2 cm. Condition B/C (cut inside the copperplate mark, shelf missing, traces of old mounting on verso, foxing and a few stains, a tear anchored to the left).
