Description
LOIRE-ATLANTIQUE (44) - "OUDON". 19th century. Original Sketch by Félix Benoist (1818-1896) in graphite on China paper. Situated "Tour d'Oudon" lower left in grey pencil. PREPARATORY DRAWING for the lithograph entitled "OUDON", for the album "NANTES ET LA LOIRE-INFERIEURE" published in 1865 by Charpentier. Annotated lower right "En échange de la Chapelle de Bethléem, M. Bichebois" in grey pencil. And under the subject annotated "To create a vigorous effect the tower is built of slate stones with white stones on the arches and around the crosspieces the foreground is a levee where the fisherman is and a lower quay where the women are". Provenance: Fonds of the Charpentier workshop run by Pierre-Henri (1788-1854) and his son Henri-Désiré (1806-1883), printers and publishers based in Paris, then in Nantes (from 1854). 26.3 x 36 cm. Condition A (rare small stains in the margins, subject in good condition).
