GIOVAN BATTISTA BONCORI (attr. to) (Campli, 1633 - Rome, 1699) Saint Jerome in a Landscape Oil on canvas, 42X26.5 cm Inscribed on the verso of the frame: Pier Francesco Mola/già collezione Ferruccio Mestrovich Venezia Inscribed on the verso of the canvas: R/376 and 24. Provenance: Venice, Ferruccio Mestrovich collection (second inscription on the verso) Milan, private collection Giovanni Battista Boncori was Pier Francesco Mola's best pupil and his activity was celebrated in the Lives dedicated to him by Nicola Pio and Lione Pascoli. The painter's fortunate career reached its peak when he was appointed Prince of the Academy of San Luca in 1699, a distinction that was to fall to Carlo Maratti the following year. Yet, of the many works mentioned in the sources, few have survived, such as the frescoes in the ambulatory of San Carlo al Corso and the Visitation of Santa Maria in Aquiro, to name but a few. Nevertheless, thanks to the research conducted by Rosella Carloni, Francesco Petrucci and in particular Massimo Francucci, we now possess a broad and up-to-date view of this author. Boncori's knowledge of painting can also be explained by the study trip that led him to Parma and Venice between 1665 and 1669, eventually stopping in Ferrara, Cento and Bologna, where on Mola's advice he studied the works of Guercino. It was thanks to the Bolognese and Neo-Venetian innovations that the artist detached himself from the hints of Cortona and achieved the delicate naturalism that distinguishes him, by virtue of his constantly evolving technical knowledge and the heterogeneous classicism of Marrakesh. In the canvas under examination, Mola's influence is clearly evident in analogy with the master's works dedicated to St. Jerome in the Desert (cf. F. Petrucci, Pier Francesco Mola (1612 ; 1666).
