Description
ALEXANDER GREVENBROECK
(late 17th century - Venice? after 1748)
Mediterranean coastal landscape with warships at anchor
Oil on canvas, 45X67 cm
Provenance:
Rome, private collection
A pupil of his father Giovanni, there is very little biographical information about the artist, except for the brief profile by Gabburri who, in his Lives of Painters, judged him to be 'very good at painting small figures and Moors in Padua' (cf. F. M. N. Gabburri, Lives of Painters, Florence (ca. 1730 ; 1742), Florence National Central Library, ms. Pal. E.B. 9.5, 4 vols. I, cc. 044r, 160v). The painter began his career working in the family workshop, indeed, the painting Port of the Sea at Sunset bears the signature of both (cf. Dassie 2019, pp. 69-127), but the continuation of his activity took place in the Veneto area influenced by his father's landscape painting and that of Johann Anton Eismann (Salzburg, 1604 ; Venice, 1698).
