The painting depicts a tavern scene in the Flemish tradition and the protagonists present caricatured faces reminiscent of the physiognomies of Adriaen van Ostade (Haarlem, 1610 ; 1684), a true singer of similar compositions with characters intoxicated by alcohol. The work also shows a vague Caravaggesque influence in the way the painter makes the figures emerge from the shadows. The background, consequently, is in shadow and it is barely possible to delineate the scenic space, while all the painter's attention is concentrated on describing the expressions, the stunned gazes and gestures of the protagonists.
The work is accompanied by critical notes by R. Colace, B. W. Meijer and F. Arisi.
