An artist born around 1589 whose name and lay lineage are unknown, his articulate career can be traced after his entry into the Capuchin Order in 1614. Fra Semplice's earliest known paintings are dated 1621 and were executed for the Capuchin church in Fontevivo near Parma. They show elements peculiar to the art of Verona and Veneto in general, combined with Nordic elements. To these suggestions must be added the influences of Bolognese art, in particular that of the Carracci, acquired during his stays in Modena, with the Este family (1610-1620), and in Parma with the Farnese family (from 1617). However, as previously mentioned, the painter's activity was geographically very varied and if in 1621 after Fontevivo we see him at the court of Mantua at the invitation of the duke himself, in 1622 he left the city to go to Genoa 'to see the works of Cangiasi et qualche altre pitture', before moving to Rome where his presence is documented until 1625 (Manzatto p. 50). These brief biographical hints suffice to indicate the painter's lively desire to know and study the art of his time, and the study under examination well reflects the Veneto and in particular Veronese influences.
