Architectural Capriccio with figures
Oil on oval canvas, 268X210 cm
Provenance:
Palermo, private collection
Vittorio Maria Bigari learnt the art of painting in Bologna in his father's atelier, later he moved to Antonio Dardani's workshop where he worked as a plasterer, also devoting himself to stage painting inspired by the Bibiena. Having lost the works he realised in 1720 in the church of San Nicolò in Carpi, his earliest known works are those housed in the church of Sant'Agostino in Rimini and the decorations of the Bolognese palazzo Aldrovandi-Montanari datable to 1722. Again in the same palace, twenty years later, the artist produced a series of works in the Great Gallery depicting the glorious events and personalities of the family. The artist, certainly known for his caprices, was also a skilful figure painter, whose evolution finds affinities with the style of Francesco Monti. Nor must we forget the Tiepolesque influences he absorbed in 1731 while collaborating in Milan with the famous Venetian artist, which led him to a refined rocaille-like luministic sensibility and a greater compositional grace. The pair of ideal views presented here can therefore be traced back in style to the artist's catalogue and resolved with an elegant scenic monumentality.
