Description
GIOVANNI BERNARDO CARBONE
(Genoa, 1616 - 1683)
Portrait of a Man in Armour
Oil on canvas, 115.3X78.2 cm
Provenance:
Bologna, private collection
Of remarkable quality and sensitive naturalism, Giovan Bernardo Carbone's art imposed itself on the flourishing 17th-century Genoese art market. The artist, who initially trained with Giovanni Andrea De Ferrari, successfully devoted himself to the portrait genre, achieving excellent results following the example of Anton Van Dyck's celebrated models, so much so that he can be considered a follower of the Flemish artist. The painter's career, recently re-examined by Daniele Sanguineti, offers few documentary traces to establish his chronology. His early works, for example, are lost or untraceable, and the reconstructible corpus only finds a secure foothold in the Portrait of Giovanni Vincenzo Imperiale with his wife, children and grandchildren at the Villa Imperiale di Terralba in Genoa in 1642, which allows us to outline his early physiognomy, the one preceding his stay in Venice between 1650 and 1657.
