Description
GIUSEPPE MORIANI
(active in Florence from 1709 to 1739)
Flagellation
Oil on canvas, 82.5X68 cm
Traced back to Giuseppe Moriani's catalogue by Sandro Bellesi, the painting represents a typical product of Camillo Sagrestani's pupil and zealous collaborator. In 1709, the artist was active in the Florentine church of San Jacopo Soprarno, decorating the chapel of San Liborio with frescoes, and after the Palazzo Capponi building site, he worked in Castelfiorentino in the church of Santa Verdiana, in collaboration with Camillo Sagrestani, Ranieri del Pace, Niccolò Lapi, Antonio Puglieschi and Agostino Veracini. Lastly, we recall the two canvases depicting the Miracles of St Francis of Paola in the Florentine church of the same name. Having said this, Moriani's works are profoundly influenced by the master, so much so that the 'easy, expeditious and delightful manner in painting, with a tasty splash of colour' acknowledged to Sacrestani by Orlandi, can be recognised in his creations.
We thank Sandro Bellesi for the attribution.
