Description
GIOVANNI STEFANO DANEDI known as IL MONTALTO
(Treviglio, 1612 - Milan, 1690)
The Magdalene
Saint Catherine
Oil on octagonal canvas, 34X28 cm (2)
Already referred in the collection to Giulio Cesare Procaccini, the canvases are to be traced back to the Danedi catalogue. Orlandi, who first sketched out a biography of the artist in his Abbecedario Pittorico published in Bologna in 1704, indicates Morazzone as his first master, but modern critics perceive in his works an open interest in Francesco del Cairo, Venetian influences and an interesting reflection on the Genoese art of Giovanni Battista Carlone and Domenico Piola, not to mention the classicist Bolognese inflections deduced from his older brother Giuseppe, a very young disciple of Guido Reni.
