Description
BARTHOLOMÄUS SPRANGER (attr. to)
(Antwerp, 1546 - Prague, 1611)
Saint Jerome
Oil on panel, 41.7X32.5 cm
Executed on an oak panel, the work bears a collector's attribution to Bartholomäus Spranger, by virtue of a similar composition by the Flemish artist registered at the Nederlands Instituut voor Kunstgeschiedenis (Dutch Institute for Art History; https://rkd.nl/imageslite/648316). From an illustrative point of view, however, the model can be traced back to a work by Francesco Vanni, which in turn spread from a print by Agostino Carracci. We can therefore verify the illustrative fortune of the image, in this case resolved with an evident quality of execution, also corroborated by the conservative tenor.
