Description
SIMON JOHANNES VAN DOUW
(Antwerp, c. 1630 - after 1677)
Battle Scene
Oil on canvas, 119X170 cm
Provenance:
London, Christie's, 11 May 1994, lot 143 (as Simon Johannes van Douw)
Milan, private collection
The style and script of the painting indicate attribution to Simon Johannes van Douw. The landscape exhibits Italianate aspects widespread in northern Europe by Nicolaes Berchem, Karel Dujardin, Philips Wouwerman, but in this case suggestions of Rubens are discernible. It is not known whether Simon Van Douw visited our peninsula, the few certain biographical data indicate that in 1655 and 1656 he is documented as an independent master in Antwerp, where he probably spent most of his life. However, a trip to Italy cannot be ruled out, even though there were many graphic examples or paintings that artists could access and be inspired by at home.
The work is accompanied by a critical file by Raffaella Colace.
