Lot no. 74
Description
FRANCESCO TREVISANI & BOTTEGA
(Koper, 1656 - Rome, 1746)
Madonna with Child and St. Joseph
Oil on canvas, 101.5X74 cm
Provenance:
Bologna, private collection
Trained in Venice and a pupil of Antonio Zanchi, Trevisani moved to Rome in 1678 and benefited from the protection of Cardinal Pietro Ottoboni. In the Eternal City, the painter approached the classicism of Carlo Maratta and Giovanni Battista Gaulli, but maintained his own stylistic and professional autonomy. In our case, the work can be placed at a mature moment, similar to the canvas in the National Museum of Fine Arts in Valletta, but it must be said that the theme was frequently addressed by the artist. Some examples are conserved in Spain, such as the Virgin and Child in the Prado Museum from the Royal Collection and another version is archived in the Zeri Photo Library (no. 61628). Finally, we would like to mention the beautiful version sold at the Spanish auction house Ansorena in March 2023, lot 178.
