Description
FRANCESCO VANNI (attr. to)
(Siena, 1564 - 1610)
Saint Sebastian
Oil on copper, 41.5X28 cm
Provenance:
Milan, private collection
The painting bears a collector's attribution to Francesco Vanni (Siena, 1563 ; 1610), one of the most important masters of the Sienese school, who trained with Arcangelo Salimbeni and then stayed in Bologna to study the works of the Carracci. He returned home in the 1690s and painted works characterised by the canons of the Counter-Reformation, as can be seen in the altarpiece for the altar of Sant'Ansano in Siena Cathedral and for the high altar in the church of San Niccolò in Sasso. Between 1600 and 1604 Vanni worked for St. Peter's Basilica, modulating his style by looking to the examples of the late Roman manner and in particular the creations of Federico Barocci. In fact, the conformation of the saint well evokes that of the Martyrdom of Saint Lucy in the Church of Saints Nicholas and Lucy in Siena dated 1697.
