Description
HERMAN VAN SWANEVELT (attr. to)
(Woerden, 1603 - Paris, 1655)
Landscape with Cephalus and Procri, c. 1620
Oil on canvas, 72X95.7 cm
Provenance:
Rome, private collection
The style of the work suggests its Roman genesis and an artist of foreign origin who was certainly influenced by Claude Lorrain. These clues lead us to recognise as the author Herman van Swanevelt, documented in the Capitoline city from 1624. It must be remembered that in 1630 the artist resided with Claude Lorrain and that his known artistic debut dates back to after this date. Understanding the earlier production relies on a philological practice that is not always easy to pursue, but does not invalidate the qualitative judgement on the painting, the genesis of which finds a sure point of reference in the works executed by the Lorraine artist in the third decade. Similarities are also perceived with the early works of Gaspard Dughet, particularly in the peculiar oxidations visible on the arboreal pieces.
