The artist can be considered one of the leading vedutists and perspective painters of the 17th century after Viviano Codazzi, whose pupil he was, with the difference that ours modulates his teachings thanks to a more narrative and less dramatic nature, incorporating those aspects of Roman bamboozling painting, while softening its more realistic and indecorous aspects. The result is a painting that combines genre narrative with the elegance of Classicism, ennobled by sumptuous fantasy architectures. His production, especially during his maturity, anticipates fully 18th century outcomes. It was precisely because of this character that Ascanio's inventions found great appreciation from Grand Tour travellers, as he offered them a mirror of everyday life and the monumentality of ancient history.
