Description
CORNELIS VAN POELENBURCH (attr. to)
(Utrecht, 1590 or 1594 or 1595 - 1667)
Rest on the Flight into Egypt with Ruins
Oil on panel, 12.5X14.5 cm
The artist, dedicated to painting refined Arcadian landscapes with an Italianising flavour, was extraordinarily popular with collectors of the Baroque era. Arriving in Italy around 1618, Poelenburch is to be considered one of the most fascinating creators of the modern landscape, in which the tradition of Nordic realism and the Italian classical ideal are reconciled, achieving surprising critical acclaim. The panel can be compared with the compositions painted in Italy by Cornelis van Poelenburch, in which the theme of the Rest during the Flight into Egypt was to be tackled by the artist several times, as can be seen by looking at the painting formerly in the collection of the Duke of Choiseul (1719 ; 1790) (London, Sotheby's, 6 July 2006, no. 180) and the one in the James Irvine collection (London, Sotheby's, 28 March 2017, lot 51).
