Porcelain talismanic bowl for the Islamic market, China, 18th c., central decoration of a magic square surrounded by concentric circles and geometric motifs, diam. 20.5 cm (cracks and restorations) Part of the collection of Ambassador Paul André Ramseyer, this talismanic porcelain bowl, produced in China but intended for the Islamic market, probably originally had a therapeutic function. It probably contained inscriptions (prayers, Koranic verses, etc.), now erased, which activated its magical functions. A similar bowl is in the Victoria & Albert Museum, London, inv. no. 1944-1855.
