Description
2 heads, North India, probably Gupta period, one of a deity in red stone, the other in terracotta, h. approx. 16 cm and 12 cm. These two heads are probably a good example of the diversity and richness of artistic production in the Gupta Empire (3rd-6th century). While the red stone head is a refined work, probably destined for a temple, the terracotta head, of popular manufacture, refers to a more everyday art. Both form part of Ambassador Paul André Ramseyer's remarkable Indian collection, which he assembled between 1968 and 1971 while serving as Secretary of Embassy in Delhi.
